House very well could be entering its final season on Fox this year, but that’s still up in the air. Something that isn’t is Olivia Wilde’s limited appearances on the medical drama, and it sounds like her final episode may have been revealed.

Farewell to Olivia Wilde’s Thirteen for good?

House season 8 is set to premiere on October 3, and it looks like Thirteen will only be around for three episodes—depending how much of the premiere is just about House in jail. According to TVLine, the October 17th episode could be the final episode that Olivia Wilde appears in, and a source has called it “a really bittersweet episode.” But could she return if House does end at the end of the season for good? Wilde has become quite the movie star, and it would likely depend on her filming schedule. House season 8 has already brought in two new female doctors—played by Charlyne Yi and Odette Annable—to replace her on the team, and it’s no surprise that Wilde isn’t going to be around for many episodes at all.

How could they be writing Thirteen off this time? Last time, she simply disappeared and when she showed up again, she had been behind bars for helping her sick brother die. Will Huntington’s play a role in her farewell this time around? Since it has been described as “bittersweet,” it looks like perhaps she won’t just pick up and leave and will instead stick around long enough for a goodbye.

Things happened at the end of last season that I wasn’t happy about and I hadn’t planned for. But I want to say we’re very happy with [the coming season]. It has been unveiled that the character, which is portrayed by Olivia Wilde and will return this season, was going to jail when she left the show in May last year.

“Thirteen has been in prison for the past year, but the real mystery for House is what she did to get there,” Fox mentions in a press release for the April 11 episode. “When she exits the prison, she is taken aback to find him waiting for her, and unaware he’s got plans for the two of them for the next few days.”

“As House probes Thirteen for more information about her crime, intent on solving the puzzle of her mysterious incarceration, they travel to an annual spud-gun competition and join forces to compete against House’s much younger, overconfident rival, and along the journey uncover secrets and truths about each other.”

Earlier this year, creator David Shore teased about his idea for Thirteen’s return “We have something very cool in mind,” he said. “We’re writing an episode built largely around her return. I know [fans] are speculating about what happened to her during her absence, and I don’t want to rule anything out.”

Wilde, meanwhile, took a leave from “House M.D.” as she was committed to her feature film project “Cowboys and Aliens”. The action fantasy movie has now been wrapped and is set to grace U.S. cinemas on July 29.

No, it had more to do with us the actors. They really wanted me to stay, but there are reasons I have to leave, because of other things I’m doing. It was my 13th episode, and that’s when Olivia had finished her film and was due back. But I was glad — I was going to be real peeved if I didn’t get to do something with her, because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things. My boyfriend (actor/comedian David Cross) has worked with her, and I’ve heard she’s a really rad chick that I would get along with well. If they hadn’t given us at least one scene, with me being the only other female team member, it would have been a missed opportunity. I think they knew better than to pass that up, so they gave us some really cool scenes together. It will be definitely juicy for House fans.

Considering Wilde’s growing popularity in the world of film, a storyline that would result in Thirteen being written off the series is not much of a stretch. Despite Wilde’s character being a fan favorite, her potential scheduling conflicts and future availability could put House producers in a position where continuing Thirteen’s storyline would hurt the overall series.

Fortunately, the speculative future of Thirteen can now stop, as House creator David Shore revealed that his plans for both Olivia Wilde and her character extend well beyond season 7.

While nothing has been set in stone, Shore firmly believes that Wilde will be returning to House for its eighth season:

“We’ll have to continue to work around her schedule a little bit. But it would be a crying shame for us to let her get away at this point. We’ve been very good to her and we’d like a little bit of it back.”

Continuing, Shore laughs that Wilde’s popularity was planned all along – to better help the series:

“That was kind of [our] plan: let her go away, become a giant movie star, and then she would come back and bring [all her new fans] with her.”

As for what fans can expect to see when Thirteen finally returns from her trip (not to) Rome? Shore isn’t talk about that just yet. Although, he did confirm that nothing has been ruled out:

While no official date as been revealed for Thirteen’s triumphant return, we do know that Olivia Wilde is currently back to work on the series and that Amber Tamblyn’s roll as the loveable Martha Masters will be ending in the coming months.

After figuring in production schedules, post-production schedules and Fox hoping to make her return a must-see event, it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing Olivia Wilde return to House just in time for May sweeps.

So is she gonna stick around?

Absolutely, if David Shore has his way. When asked if Amber will replace Olivia Wilde, who has been off shooting movies for most of the current season, the smarty-pants boss man says: “I love Amber Tamblyn. I would love to work with her and I’d love to continue to work with her. Whether or not she wants to work with us or not…She’s great. She’s great and it’s been fun working with her.”

“Very strong emotional feelings, very intimate feelings from David Shore!” Amber jabbed back playfully at the EP. Behind the scenes, it seems the new girl at Princeton-Plainsboro is fitting right in with the cast. “I was actually BBMing Omar [Epps] all the way over here!” Amber says on how close they’ve become.

While the jury’s still out on whether Olivia will be a part of House after this season, Peter Jacobson (Taub) says fans shouldn’t put too much credence in rumors that her character Thirteen will be killed off when she returns this spring. “I think it would be outrageous to think that she is going to die. I can’t really say anything for sure because they are very good at keeping things secret over there in the House writers’ office. But you will see Olivia—and I think it will be a good thing to see her.”

Maybe not such a welcome visitor? The woman who will serve as a roadblock to House and Cuddy’s current romance. Lisa Edelstein teases, “Cuddy’s mother comes into town. So that’s going to stir a few things up, which will be a lot of fun.” She adds that House and Cuddy’s mom will certainly not get along very well, which makes things very hard on Cuddy. “They definitely are both very strong personalities!” she says with a laugh.

And Jacobson gives this hilarious/interesting tease, which sure sounds reminiscent of Peter Facinelli’s storyline last season on Nurse Jackie—but you better believe it’s different: “Taub becomes briefly the face of Princeton-Plainsboro. I’ll leave it at that—and I said briefly.” So he’s either driving home the point that it’s a short-lived storyline, or Taub is gonna sport some boxer-briefs? Awesome!

So what about those other femmes fatale at Princeton-Plainsboro? While Olivia Wilde (“Thirteen”) has been MIA for much of the season (maybe you caught her most recently in Tron?), Amber Tamblyn has stepped in to fill the void. “I adore Amber Tamblyn,” Lisa says. “First of all, she’s been acting since she was an embryo, and she’s very bright, and she’s very together, and she’s hilariously funny…Really confident—a really self-confident young woman. Olivia, too—it’s nice to be around such smart, confident, together young women.”

As for the money Q—Will Olivia Wilde ever return as a series regular?—Lisa says, “I think she’s still considered one [a series regular]. It’s just that she’s off being a movie star. Bye, Olivia. It was nice knowing you…She’s coming back. She’s coming back this year.”
